How To Seize FSMO Roles in Windows Server 2012 R2

1. Go to server and open Run then type cmd->OK. Now type 2 commands as below:

Netdom Query FSMO
Net Accounts

As we can see, all 5 roles has on DC1 Server (DC1.Yahoo.com) and this is our Primary Server.

2. Go to other side server and enter both 2 commands like Server1.
Here we can see, all roles has on DC1 Server and this server is our Backup Server.

3. Now enter 6 commands back to back on ADC or backup server:

ntdsutil
roles
connections
connect to server yahoo.com (here yahoo.com is our domain name)
quit
?
After entering ? key we can see all commands for role seizing and transferring. Here we will seize all roles.

4. Now type: seize infrastructure master and press Enter key it will show a confirmation massage click on Yes button.

5. Type: Quit  then again type Quit then netdom query fsmo
here we can see, one role infrastructure has been seized on DC2 server (DC2.Yahoo.com)

6. We can check this role in graphic mode also. To see this, go to Server Manager then Tools then click on Active Directory Users and Computers. Right Click on domain name (Yahoo.com) then click on Operation Master. Click on Infrastructure role. Here we can see, this role has been transferred successfully to DC2 server.

7.  Now come back on CMD and continue transferring roles.

Type: seize PDC and press Enter key it will show a confirmation massage click on Yes button.

 Check it on graphic mode.

8. Type: seize RID master and press Enter key it will show a confirmation massage click on Yes button.

Check it on graphic mode.

9. Type: seize naming master and press Enter key it will show a confirmation massage click on Yes button.

Check it on graphic mode. Go to Server Manager then Tools then click on Active Directory Domain and trusts. Right Click on domain name (Yahoo.com) then click on Operation Master.

Here we can see, this role has been transferred successfully to DC2 server.

10. Type: seize schema master and press Enter key it will show a confirmation massage click on Yes button.

To see this role in GUI mode, follow the below steps:

11. Go to Server and open Run and type regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll and press Enter key or click on OK button.

A massage will prompt click on OK.

12. Now open Run again and type MMC and press Enter key. A console window will open. Go to File menu and click on Add/Remove Snap-in option. 

A new window will open. Select Active Directory Schema and click on Add button then click on OK button.:

13. Right click on Active Directory Schema and go to Operation Master

Note: here you can see, the schema master role has on DC2 Server (DC2.Yahoo.com)

After confirming this you may go to server and open cmd then check roles by netdom query fsmo command.

14. Go to Server 1.

Here you can see, all roles has been seized to DC2 server and DC2 is now our Primary Server.

15. Go to Server 2.

Here also you can see, all roles has been seized to DC2 server and this is now our Backup Server or ADC Server.
